West Cork, Ireland

Returning to the harbour about 9:30pm

Peter and I went kayaking at 7pm. The sea was absolutely calm and the sky clear so we were able to explore sea caves a bit further out from the harbour area where we launched. The caves are very deep. By the time the swell makes it to the back it has built up a bit of energy and so slams the back wall with a reverberating thundering boom that is frighteningly deep. There is nothing quite like bobbing about in a kayak on riffles under a big swell, however, and paddling about was an easy skate. Cliff faces looked dramatic from a distance but paddling in close the entrances to even the slightest cave were themselves massive vaulted spaces that yawned overhead and cooled the air around.

This entrance was too small to enter. From the water line to the water level is about 24 inches.
